Understanding Long COVID: Types & Symptoms
It’s increasingly recognized by doctors and researchers around the world that long COVID isn’t one single condition—it affects each person differently, and must be approached individually. While symptoms vary widely, many people tend to share common patterns in how long COVID shows up in their bodies. These are sometimes called “phenotypes” or “subtypes”. They aren’t official medical diagnoses, but they can help us better understand what’s happening, what to expect, and what kinds of support or therapies might help.
The chart below is here to help you identify which types or “symptom patterns” of long COVID feels most familiar to you.
Note: These “types” of long COVID are here to help you make sense of your symptoms—but they’re not strict categories. Many people experience symptoms from more than one category, and your symptoms might change over time.
It is also important to understand that treatments and therapies are in two broad categories: those that help you feel better immediately without targeting the root cause (e.g. Melatonin for sleep or Beta blockers for POTS); and those that target the root cause and aim to end the illness all together (e.g. Antivirals for lingering virus).
