What Is AHCC?
AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) is a functional food extract derived from the mycelia of shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes). It is rich in alpha-glucans and known for its immune-boosting properties. AHCC has been widely used in Japan and other countries as a dietary supplement to support immune function, especially in the context of viral infections, cancer treatment, and chronic fatigue. More recently, it is being explored as a potential treatment for Long COVID, where persistent symptoms may be linked to immune dysfunction and persistent virus.

Why Melatonin Might Help for Long COVID
Supports Immune Regulation – AHCC enhances activity of natural killer (NK) cells, CD8⁺ T cells, and other immune cells—key for clearing residual viral proteins and normalizing immune overactivity.
Helps Control Reactivated Viruses – Some Long COVID patients show reactivation of viruses like EBV or HHV-6. AHCC has been shown to lower HHV-6 levels in chemo patients and clear chronic HPV in others.
Reduces Inflammation – AHCC may rebalance the immune system, reducing chronic low-grade inflammation linked to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and pain.
What the Research Says
While research on AHCC in Long COVID is still emerging, one early pilot study showed that patients taking AHCC twice daily for 30 days reported reduced fatigue, improved breathing, and better cognitive function. These improvements were supported by physiological tests, such as lung function measurements.
In related conditions like persistent HPV, AHCC has cleared chronic infections in a majority of patients. Other trials show AHCC improves immune cell function, increases resistance to viral infections, and reduces fatigue in cancer patients. Together, these findings support AHCC’s potential as an immune-rebalancing therapy for post-viral illness.

Key studies on Melatonin and Long COVID
Studies Showing Positive Effects
This open-label pilot study tested AHCC in 12 Long COVID patients over 30 days. Patients reported improvements in fatigue, brain fog, and respiratory symptoms. Pulmonary function also improved. No serious side effects.
This HPV clearance trial found that 3 g/day of AHCC cleared persistent high-risk HPV in 63.6% of treated patients after 6 months. No major side effects were reported.
This chemo-support study found that AHCC reduced reactivation of HHV-6 and fatigue in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Final Thoughts and Typical Use
AHCC is a well-studied natural compound that offers a balanced approach to immune support—enhancing viral defense while reducing inflammation. Early studies in Long COVID and broader evidence from other viral infections suggest it may help patients regain energy, clear persistent viral triggers, and reduce immune overactivation. Typical dosing is around 2-3 g/day total, taken 2 or 3 times. It is recommended that you consult with your doctor before starting it.
